Greeting for the inauguration of an English-language journal

Satoru Takeda, M.D., Ph.D.
Hypertension Research in Pregnancy

Dear Readers,

We are pleased to announce the inauguration of an official journal for the Japan Society for the Study of Hypertension in Pregnancy (JSSHP) published in English. Our Society was launched in 1980 as the Meeting for the Study of Toxemia of Pregnancy. The name was changed in 1994 to the Japan Society for the Study of Toxemia of Pregnancy (JSSTP), and a commemorative first Japanese-language edition of our journal was published the same year. In 2004, the terms, definition and classification of “toxemia of pregnancy” were revised to those corresponding to “pregnancy induced hypertension” and the name of our Society was also changed accordingly to the current Japan Society for the Study of Hypertension in Pregnancy. One volume of this Japanese-language journal has been published every year since then, and we have now released 31 volumes altogether.

Our Society provides a forum for carrying out basic and clinical studies on pregnancy induced hypertension (PIH) from all angles, including pathology, management and treatment, and for conducting active and animated discussions. The definitions and classifications also include disease classifications unique to Japan, such as “early onset type” and “late onset type.” We have decided to publish an English-language journal to share and discuss our new ideas and information, the latest PIH research results from Japan, as well as the current views surrounding PIH in Japan, with the rest of the world.

I believe that increasingly active research in this field will help ensure safe pregnancies and deliveries, and, ultimately, promote the health and happiness of mothers and their children. I look forward to receiving papers contributed from all over the world.
